In my 20 years of practice as an adult cardiac surgeon, I still see cases of patients with aortic regurgitation referred for surgery too late. Chronic aortic regurgitation can remain asymptomatic for a long time: waiting for symptoms to appear before proposing surgery sometimes risks a decline in left ventricular function that could have been avoided.
